Montefalco's principal source of renown is its wealth of paintings, housed mainly in the monumental Church of San Francesco which is now the town's Pinacoteca.
It is one of the shrines of italian art and, whith its important works covering the most significant periods of three centuries, an esential point of reference in the study of Umbriam art.
Between 1450 and 1452, Benozzo Gozzoli painted the frescoes covering the entire central apse and repicting scenes from the life of St Francis (12 panels), his glorification among the saint of his Order (ceiling), his first companions (below the arches), and the great Franciscans (above the Choir stalls); all the work is part of an organic framework which is in itself an elegant decoration, one of the most prestigious creations of italian Renaissance. Gozzoli olso decorated the right with a false polyptych depicting scenes from the life on saint Jerome, Crocifixion, the Evangelists and various Saints. These works in Montefalco by the Florentine painter brought the first breath of Humanism to Umbria and led to radical changes in the artistic movement in the area which could not be disregarded. The adjoining Pinacoteca houses works by the Foligno artists Nicolò Alunno and Pierantonio Mezzastris, by Melozzo da Forlì, Antoniazzo Romano, by the Montefalco artists Francesco Melanzio and Tiberio d'Assisi. Another painting of note is Perugino's traditional nativity scene showing his usual variety of fresh spacious panoramas and clear colours.
